New Deal Years

 

Radio Broadcast Assignment

 

In this project, we will learn about all aspects of American society during the 1930’s.  During the Great Depression, many families stayed at home and listened to the radio and played board games as a less expensive alternative form of entertainment.  Your job is to keep Americans informed as you learn all that you can about this time period!!

 

This will be a group project.  Each group will be assigned one year from 1929-1939.  The groups will consist of two to three people.  Each group will then create a radio broadcast between 5-8 minutes concerning their year. Additionally, each group will create an outline that goes along with the presentation  

 

You must have a segment on each of the following: (there are 9 segments divide the segments equally between group members)

 

1.       __________ State news—you choose a state that may have some interesting happenings

2.      __________National news

3.      __________Business report

4.      __________Sports news

5.      __________Entertainment news

6.      __________Musical selection from the times

7.      __________Fireside Chat**Years 1929-1932 substitute Hoover Speeches

8.      __________Advertisement for a product (3 of these - - movies, games, products, etc.)

9.      __________New Deal update – you must include a new deal program from the year and what it entails, how it  is making a difference, et al.**years 1929-1932 substitute Hoover’s programs

10.  _________ You may SUBSTITUTE any of the above (except 9) for INTERNATIONAL NEWS

 

v  You may pick any city and state you wish.  You may discuss these topics in any order.

 

v  REMINDER:  I need an outline of the broadcast

 

v  Radio broadcasts will be recorded on Wednesday, January 18th

 

v  Computer lab time:  Tuesday, Jan 10, Tuesday Jan 17.  Any other work must be done on your own time!

 

v  During this time, radio broadcasters used sound effects to entertain their listeners, and played clips from songs they were talking about.

  • Book Catalog and Cart
    There will be a cart of books available for your use in the computer lab. You can also search for books using the online card catalog.
  • Grolier's Encyclopedia
    Online encyclopedia, accessible from home, too (get the orange password bookmark at the circ desk). Search by keyword
  • Discovering Collection (database)
    Search by keyword to find information, including reference book materials and pictures
  • Student Resources in Context (database)
    Click on "topics" on the menu bar and from the topics list, click on "1930's." Here you will find information on many of the important events and people of the decade.
  • National Archives Digital Vaults
    Search for things here with terms like "Great Depression." You'll find primary source materials, which you could read aloud for the radio broadcast. Be patient with the site, you'll learn to navigate within it, just takes a bit to figure out.
  • American Cultural History: 1930-1939
    From Lone Star college, a site with information on historic events, people and personalities, education, fads and fashion, music, radio, science and technology and theater.
  • Great Depression - Shmoop Guide
    This guide includes timeline, people, and facts of the decade, PLUS a listing of the best web sites on this year.

Music and Sound Effects

Aviary/Myna

Use Aviary/Myna to record your podcast.  Make sure to use Google Chrome as your web browser.  It is installed on all library computers, look under the Start and All Programs menus.

To access Myna:

1.  Log into Moodle with your school username and password
2.  Click on "documents" under Edina Apps in the right corner
3.  In the black menu bar at the top, click on "more" and from the drop down menu choose "Aviary"

You must access Avairy following the steps listed above.  It is the only way it will recognize you and allow you to create a podcast using your school log-on credentials.  Save your project to your EdinaApps account.
